Sony Playstation Game Console History

game tester guide

Sony Playstation game console history is relatively brief in terms of time but also very successful. The Sony Playstation was first launched by Sony Computer Entertainment in Japan in 1994 and then to the rest of the world in 1995. This console was wildly popular and became the first home console to reach 100 million units sold.

Some of the most popular titles to be released on the Playstation include Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII, Crash Bandicoot, Grand Theft Auto, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver , Resident Evil, Tekken, and Wipeout. Nearly 8,000 titles were released for this console, one of it's main selling points was the sheer variety of games that could be played on the system.

Sony released a smaller version of the console called the PSone in 2000. This version could be purchased with it's own screen and an adapter to power the console in cars.

The next console to be released by Sony was the PlayStation 2 in 2000. It was designed to be backward compatible with the PS1, this meant that gamers could still play all their old favourites as well as the new and more advanced PS2 games.

Sony brought out a hand held console called the Playstation Portable or PSP in 2004. This device could play films and music as well as games.

The latest Playstation console, the Playstation 3, has now been launched in Japan and the US. It should be out in Europe in a few months time. This console is also compatible with games designed for both the PS1 and PS2.
